Our family loves springtime in Bloomington. Those first few days, as sunlight warms up the world and the grass is turning green again, you’ll find us out and about soaking up some of our favorite adventures around the city.
The Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market runs through September. Shop for fresh fruits, veggies, and flowers. Or, just take in the sights and sounds of the market. In the spring there is the added bonus of seeing other Bloomingtonians who have emerged from hibernation. (New in 2018, an Ellettsville Farmers Market will be opening in the Bender Lumber parking lot (6002 W. Ind. 46), as well.
When the treetops are dancing in the spring breeze, grab a kite and head to Bryan Park. I’m sure there are other great locations in Bloomington for kite flying, but Bryan Park offers open fields, picnic tables, playgrounds, and the all-important potty!!
Our spring bucket list would not be complete without a day of puddle jumping. The beauty of this adventure is that you don’t even have to leave home. Suit up in your rain gear or get out the bathing suits – whatever the weather dictates – and splash away!
Splashing is not limited to home. When spring days start warming up and summer teases the air, plan to visit one of the city parks with a creek for splashing and exploration. Sherwood Oaks Park and Lower Cascades Park are two of our favorites. Don’t forget to throw in some towels for the ride home.
As my kids have gotten older, a favorite spring outing has been to the Skate Park at Upper Cascades. Roller blades, scooters, skateboards, bikes, oh my! Bring your wheels and your helmets for a run on the concrete hills before the summer sun heats them up to broiling.
A spring list of Bloomington outings would not be complete without a visit to IU’s campus. Grab your kids and your camera for a walk across campus to take advantage of all the wonderful plants and paths. With the beautiful tulips, pansies, daffodils, redbuds and dogwoods, there are flowers and Kodak moments galore! Pop into the IU Memorial Union for a snack, check out a recital at the music school or take in a spring sporting event.
